What is IRC?

Internet Relay Chat. Big, old technology that lets people chat in real-time, so you could call #spherecg a chat-room for talking about the Sphere Community Game.

How do I use it?

Like this

  1. Get an IRC client.
  2. Connect to EsperNet.
  3. Join #sphere.
  4. Talk!

Get an IRC client

You have lots of choices.

  • mIRC: Popular amongst Windows users. It's shareware, so it bugs you, but it doesn't expire (despite what the dialog at startup may say.)
  • XChat: Cross-platform GUI client. Popular amongst Lunix nerds.
  • Chatzilla: A Mozilla Firefox extension which makes it a client that runs inside Firefox. Also makes it completely cross-platform. Easy to use.
  • Java Web Client: The espernet's Java webclient

There's dozens more; check out the Wikipedia page that compares them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_IRC_clients

Connect to EsperNet

This differs between clients. First, bring up a list of servers. If it's there, it'll be labelled "EsperNet". Connect to that, and go to the next step.

ChatZilla shows a bunch of links to common "IRC networks", as they're called. Clicking on one will connect to it. Failing that, there's a /connect command you can type and use.

If you don't have EsperNet in the listing for whatever reason, scroll down to the EsperNet? section.

Join #sphere

If your client prompts for a channel to join, type #sphere, and you're in!

If it doesn't, just type:

/join #sphere

And you're in!

Talk!

Just type whatever you want to say and press Enter. That's it!

Continue until you get bored.

EsperNet?

If you don't have EsperNet in your server/network listing, you'll have to add it yourself.

  • Find the command to add a network.
  • Put the name "EsperNet".
  • Enter this under the EsperNet entry: irc.esper.net
  • Save and connect!

The default port number (6667) should work, but some servers connect on other ports as well.

There's more!

EsperNet allows you to register your nickname, register channels, send memos to off-line people, and provide help for all of these functions.

Check them out at the help page: http://www.esper.net/help.html
