Kardashev Unus: Ortus Peona is the first game in a series of science fiction console-style RPG games that chronicle human expansion into the Solar System. Unlike many other “futuristic” RPGs, such as Final Fantasies 7 and 8, there will be no magic. There will be technologies that “are like magic”, but in the sense of Arthur C. Clarke's third law that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” With this, the series will be entirely removed from the traditional medieval fantasy contexts, and totally into the realm of science fiction.

Like all sci-fi works, the series will address issues not only related to science and technology, but also to politics, worldview, love, hate, war, idealism, utopia, dystopia, and questions about the divine and supernatural. Some of the major issues covered will be bigotry, hatred, ludditism, transhumanism, the limits of humanity, armageddon, religion, dogma, bioengineering, war, destructive weaponry, cultural change, computers, robots, totalitarianism, genocide, anarchism, democracy, etc. It will combine many features from the Xenosaga, Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, and Chrono RPG series.

Game Description

As people look back over the 21st century, they can see a golden era of civilization. Humanity is expanding civilization into the space around Earth. They have built industries and cities in the seas, in orbit, on the Moon, on Near Earth asteroids and comets, and are starting to expand it to Mars. Over the 21st century, various technologies have advanced and proliferated, including information technology, nanotechnology, robotics, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. This has led to a luminous renaissance of science, the arts, human rights, the intellect, living standards, quality of life, and environmental repair.

But now, human civilization is entering its darkest hour. There are those who wish to use these new technologies and sciences to oppress, enslave, and murder others. There are those who are hostile to technology and knowledge, and wish to create a new Dark Age, or worse. And on top of it all, the Earth is rapidly descending into a new ice age. What will become of human civilization? Will 6000 years of civilization and progress crash into a new stone age? Or will civilization survive and thrive, extending the reach of civilization and life throughout space, and explore new frontiers of knowledge, spirit, creativity, experience, and existence?

Plot and Setting

This game is centered around the adventures of a young college student named Desiree. She was born on Earth's moon Luna late in the 21st century. The daughter of a famous scientist and a also the daughter of a legendary freedom fighter and activist, Desiree hopes to one day follow in their footsteps and write her name in the history books. But when events take a harsh turn; when it becomes a matter of life and death, she will have to cope with fear, courage, and wits.

This game will take place in the 2090s and will span the entire Earth-Luna system. You will explore familiar locations (Tokyo, Chicago, Lagos), and new ones (most of the space settlements). The setting will be entirely science fiction. You will explore politics, economics, and technological change. You will have to team up with many people, each with their own special skills, to fight for the future of human civilization and for everything that is good and right.

Gameplay

This will be your normal RPG. If you have played the Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, or Phantasy Star series, then you pretty much know what to expect.

The Battles will be the standard ATB type system. The battles will not be random. You will see the enemy sprites on screen, and touching them will engage you in battle.
